Brinda Manickavasagam delivered a strong and stirring performance for Gana Mukundapriya at BVB mini hall yesterday. She was supported by Akkarai Swarnalatha on the violin and N.C.Bharadwaj on the mridangam.
The song list:
1. Valachi vachi, ragamalika varnam
2. Parameswara jagadeeswara, Nattai, Adi, MD (s @ shankara pahimam)
3. Shyama sundaranga, danyasi, rupakam, T
4. Arabhi, Maravanune ninnu, Adi, GNB
5. Chittam Irangadhadhu enayya, Sahana, misra chapu, Sivan
6. Simhendramadhyamam, Rama rama guna seema, Adi, Swati (ns @ muni ma)
7. Muruganin maru peyar, Behag,
8. Pavamana
Personal observations:
1. A powerful and strong sonorous voice from a deceptively diminutive Brinda made one sit up and pay attention from the moment the concert started all the way to the end.
2. A nice mix of less common kritis (items #2, #3 and #4) and a natural affinity for laya (like the vishama eduppu for swaras in item #2) kept the proceedings interesting.
3. Both the accompanists were very supportive and maintained a good rapport with the main artiste all evening and did their solo portions splendidly.
4. Quite improved from the last time I heard her . The drive to be spontaneous and creative on stage tempered with the needs of aesthetic presentation made this a very satisfying concert experience.
